Background
EdgeConneX, a data center operator backed by Swedish private equity firm EQT, is building its first Ohio campus in New Albany, part of the rapidly growing data center cluster in the Columbus metro area. The company acquired 270 acres from VanTrust Real Estate for $137.2 million, including a 524,525-square-foot warehouse at 9850 Innovation Campus Way that is being converted into a data center as Phase I. Phase II will add a new two-story, 700,000-square-foot data center building and an 80,000-square-foot energy center.
To power the campus, EdgeConneX is building behind-the-meter generation through its affiliate PowerConneX, which has filed three separate applications with the Ohio Power Siting Board for gas-fired power plants at the same site. None of the facilities will be connected to the electric grid. As EdgeConneX has noted, the approach "provides its own power solution, relieving AEP of the infrastructure burden." Natural gas will be supplied by National Gas and Oil Cooperative.
Generation Equipment
PowerConneX I (PCX1) — 120 MW. The first facility was approved by OPSB on July 22, 2025. Construction began in August 2025, with commercial operations expected between January and September 2026. The facility uses a mix of INNIO Jenbacher reciprocating engines and Mainspring linear generators:
- 28x INNIO Jenbacher J624: ~4.5 MW each (~124.9 MW)
- 4x INNIO Jenbacher J620: ~3.3 MW each (~13.3 MW)
- 16x Mainspring Linear Generator (MSE3): 230 kW each (~3.7 MW)
- Total: 48 generation units, 120 MW
As of mid-May 2026, satellite imagery shows 18 engines installed with concrete pads laid for the remaining 14 units.
PowerConneX II (PCX2) — 216 MW. The second facility was approved by OPSB on November 20, 2025. Construction began in December 2025. The facility is expected to reach commercial operations between October 2026 and March 2027. PCX2 uses a different generation technology than PCX1:
- 15x Wartsila 18V50SG: ~18.8 MW each (~282.3 MW nameplate, rated at 216 MW)
- Total: 15 generation units, 216 MW
PCX2 will also include a battery energy storage system, per the OPSB approval.
PowerConneX New Albany 3 (PCX NA 3) — 430 MW. A third, much larger facility is in the pre-application stage. The case was opened with OPSB on April 10, 2026. No equipment details have been disclosed yet.
If all three facilities are built, the campus would have 766 MW of behind-the-meter generation, making it one of the largest off-grid data center power buildouts in Ohio alongside Meta's Socrates complex in the same region.
