Background
Stargate Frontier is another campus in the OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank Stargate project. The site is being developed by Vantage Data Centers, one of the largest data center operators in North America, backed by private equity firms DigitalBridge and Silver Lake. Vantage announced the project on August 19, 2025, and the site was officially confirmed as a Stargate campus on September 23, 2025, when OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank announced five new Stargate locations. At full build-out, the Frontier campus will span 1,200 acres with 10 single-story data centers totaling 3.7 million square feet and 1.4 GW of IT capacity. Unlike the nearby Stargate Abilene campus, which takes a hybrid approach with both grid and onsite generation, Frontier will operate entirely off-grid.
Power Strategy
Frontier's power will come from an onsite, behind-the-meter natural gas microgrid built and operated by VoltaGrid. The partnership between Vantage and VoltaGrid was first announced in February 2025, covering 1+ GW of off-grid natural gas generation across Vantage's North American portfolio.
The deal expanded significantly in October 2025, when Oracle separately announced an agreement with VoltaGrid to supply 2.3 GW of natural gas power infrastructure for Oracle Cloud Infrastructure's AI data centers across Texas. The deal names Energy Transfer as the gas supplier and INNIO Jenbacher and ABB as key technology partners. INNIO confirmed the 2.3 GW order was its largest contract ever, consisting of 92 power racks generating 25 MW each using Jenbacher reciprocating engines for both prime and backup power.
An Oracle fact sheet confirms the Frontier campus specifically will use an "onsite, behind-the-meter, gas-powered microgrid utilizing Jenbacher reciprocating engines," tying the VoltaGrid/INNIO deal directly to this site.
A TCEQ air permit filing provides the full breakdown of generation equipment at the site: 620 Jenbacher reciprocating internal combustion engines (RICE) distributed across 10 power blocks, along with 20 Caterpillar diesel black start engines. The Jenbacher fleet consists of two models: up to 250 J620 engines rated at 3.22 MW each and up to 370 larger J624 engines rated at 4.80 MW each, for a combined gross capacity of approximately 2.58 GW.
Construction Timeline
Land clearing at the Frontier site began in September 2025. As of April 13, 2026, satellite imagery shows vertical construction underway on five buildings, with foundations laid for two more. No power generation equipment was visible.
Construction is progressing at a pace close to Stargate Abilene, where Crusoe finished its first building shell six months after land clearing began. Vantage and Oracle have said the first building would come online in H2 2026, but benchmarking against the Abilene timeline suggests that may be optimistic. Crusoe's first 200 MW phase at Abilene took 15 months from the start of construction to going live, and 12 months from the point when the first building shell was at a comparable stage to Frontier's current progress. That would put Frontier's first power coming online somewhere between late 2026 and Q2 2027, with the bulk of buildings and power capacity likely coming online in 2027.
