Background

Meta announced its Bowling Green Data Center in April 2025, revealing it as the company behind "Project Accordion," a development that had been under discussion since at least 2023 with local officials signing non-disclosure agreements to conceal Meta's identity. The 715,000-square-foot, AI-optimized campus represents an investment of more than $800 million and is Meta's second data center in Ohio, after its New Albany campus outside Columbus. Ground was broken in October 2024, with the data center expected to be operational around 2027.

Power Strategy

The Bowling Green campus uses a hybrid approach: the data center itself connects to the FirstEnergy grid, while a separate onsite gas plant provides behind-the-meter generation. In a January 2025 letter to Middleton Township trustees, Meta said it would "pay for millions of dollars in new energy infrastructure investments — network upgrades, utility substations, and transmission lines" through its partnership with FirstEnergy. Satellite imagery confirms a connection to a substation and high-voltage transmission lines.

For onsite generation, Meta is again partnering with The Williams Companies, the same firm building the Socrates power plants at Meta's New Albany campus. Williams is building the Apollo Power Generation Facility through its subsidiary Will-Power OH LLC, under a 10-year power purchase agreement with an option for Meta to extend, according to a Williams November 2025 earnings call.

Williams filed the Apollo project with the Ohio Power Siting Board on October 16, 2025, under the accelerated Letter of Notification process. The OPSB approved it on February 3, 2026 with no public hearing, a turnaround of roughly 90 days from filing to approval. The first 150 MW of capacity is expected in service by July 2027, with the remainder by August 2027.
