Background
Joule Capital Partners is developing what it describes as a 12 GW data center campus on 4,000 acres of former farmland in rural Millard County, Utah. The project has scaled rapidly since its initial announcement, an August 2025 press release described it as 4 GW total capacity, but the company's website now lists 12 GW at full build-out with over 30 million square feet of computing space. On August 5, 2025, the Millard County Commission unanimously approved rezoning of the parcel from agricultural to heavy industrial use. Joule broke ground in November 2025, with Phase 1 including 6 data center facilities. No end customer has been publicly named.
Power Strategy
The campus will generate all of its own power on-site, independent of the grid. On August 7, 2025, Joule, Caterpillar Inc., and Wheeler Machinery Co. — a local Utah-based Caterpillar dealer — announced an agreement to power the campus using Caterpillar G3520K natural gas reciprocating generator sets.
First equipment delivery was scheduled for March 2026, with 455 MW of capacity targeted for Q4 2026. The company's phasing plan scales aggressively from there: 1.4 GW by 2027, 5.8 GW by 2029, and 12 GW by 2032.
The generation will be supplemented by 1.1 GWh of grid-forming battery energy storage, along with backup power generation from diverse fuel sources that have not been specified.
For natural gas supply, the campus will connect via redundant 36-inch interconnections with the Kern River Gas Transmission mainline, which passes through Millard County.
