Background

In November 2025, Google announced plans to invest $40 billion in Texas data centers, including new campuses in Armstrong County and Haskell County. Google confirmed to Cleanview that it has partnered with Crusoe Energy to develop the Armstrong County campus, known as "Goodnight," near the town of Claude. Construction had already begun in May 2025, months before Google's public announcement.

Crusoe originally submitted tax abatement documents to Armstrong County in August 2024 with building designs matching the Stargate project. The campus is Crusoe's second major data center development, alongside its Stargate Abilene campus for OpenAI.

When Cleanview reached out for comment, Google confirmed the partnership but said it has not signed an offtake agreement with Crusoe for the natural gas plant. A person familiar with the partnership described negotiations as ongoing, with the amount of power Google would use from the gas plant still to be determined.

Power Strategy

The Goodnight campus uses a split power architecture that combines grid power, onsite gas generation, wind, and battery storage.

Onsite gas generation. In January 2026, Crusoe filed a TCEQ permit application to build 933 MW of natural gas generation capacity using 20 GE Vernova LM6000 aeroderivative turbines. Notably, the turbines are not being purchased as finished units from GE Vernova. They are sourced through two third-party packagers:

  • 13x ProEnergy Model 6000 (PE6000), described in the permit's BACT analysis as "based on the General Electric LM6000 turbine but manufactured by ProEnergy"
  • 7x Dynamis Aero DT46, described as "based on the General Electric LM6000 turbine but manufactured by Dynamis Power Solutions"

The permit states that "due to the power needs of the Facility, the turbines are intending to operate at full load at all times. In the event that less power is needed... a turbine(s) will be taken offline rather than running turbines at a lower load."

Islanded design. The campus has a split power architecture. Buildings 1-4 are powered by the traditional utility grid, with diesel generators as backup. Buildings 5-6 are entirely islanded, powered exclusively by the onsite gas turbines. The gas turbines also provide backup to Building 4 "to reduce the load on the utility grid," suggesting the local utility cannot supply the full capacity required for the complete campus. The campus includes 173 Caterpillar 3516 diesel backup generators (519 MW) and 10 dedicated diesel "Black Start" generators enabling entirely grid-independent cold start.

Wind power. Crusoe also submitted a PUCT application for a net-metering arrangement with Goodnight Wind 1, a ~265 MW wind project.

Grid territory. Though located in Texas, the Goodnight campus sits within the Southwest Power Pool (SPP) territory rather than ERCOT.

Construction Progress

Cleanview commissioned satellite imagery on February 24, 2026 to assess the site. The first two buildings had been constructed, with four more under construction, including Buildings 5 and 6, which will be powered by the onsite gas plant. No natural gas turbines appeared to be onsite at that time.
